Commencing with the brief history of mobile communications and the portrayal of the concept of wireless multimedia communications, the implications of Shannon's theorems regarding joint source and channel coding are addressed. Following a brief introduction to speech, video and graphical source coding as well as the cellular concept, a short description of the mobile propagation channel is o ered in order to equip the reader with the apparatus required for a rudimentary overview of secondand third-generation mobile radio systems. The second-generation Pan-European mobile radio system known as GSM and the British DCS-1800 system are described in order to introduce various logical tra c and control channels required for the system's operation and highlight some of the network control concepts, which might nd their way in to third-generation PCN systems to ensure backward compatibility of the new generation of transceivers with existing schemes. After a brief comparison of existing second-generation systems we summarise the fundamental concepts of modulation and show that third-generation transceivers might become adaptively re-con gurable under network control in order to meet backwards compatibility requirements and achieve best compromise amongst a range of con icting system requirements in terms of communications quality, bandwidth requirements, complexity and power consumption, robustness against channel errors, etc. This treatise is supported by a range of real-time video and speech demonstrations under the WWW homepage: http://wwwmobile.ecs.soton.ac.uk
